Pair of Gauri Heads, II

Representing the Goddess Gauri revered for her perfect devotion and fidelity. Gauri is also known as the Golden One and is a representation of Parvati, the consort of Shiva. The tradition of such worship was something women did together and passed their Gauri heads from one generation to another.

These heads were worshipped in pairs and are often found painted. The paint was refreshed before the annual Gauri Puja.

Gauri heads are decorated with jewelry and various hairstyles. Note the hair embellishments given to this pair. These are and were much loved household items.
